When Dr. Amy Lang called Lynn Stahl in 2007 to share her vision for a new cancer support organization in San Antonio, Texas, neither of them could have imagined the impact that conversation would one day have across the community.
At the time, Dr. Lang saw a growing need among cancer patients who were struggling not only with treatment, but also with the financial realities that often accompany a diagnosis. Patients were unable to afford copays, transportation to appointments, and other basic necessities while fighting for their lives. She also recognized the need for expanded wellness programming and funding for promising local cancer research.
Dr. Lang asked Lynn to consider becoming the first president of this still unnamed organization.
Lynn’s response was immediate and humble.
“I told her I had never been president of anything,” Lynn recalls.
With encouragement from Dr. Lang and alongside fellow co-founder Amy Oefinger, Lynn stepped into the role. Together, they built the foundation that would become ThriveWell Cancer Foundation, creating an organization dedicated to removing barriers to cancer care through patient assistance, wellness programming, and funding innovative research.
Today, Lynn continues to serve as a ThriveWell board member and remains deeply connected to the mission that helped shape the organization from the very beginning.
Making a Difference One Patient at a Time
For Lynn, the greatest reward has always been seeing the direct impact ThriveWell has on patients and families facing cancer.
“I love hearing from patients who have made meaningful changes in their diet and exercise habits through our programs,” she shares. “To know they are reducing the likelihood of recurrence while improving their emotional well being is incredibly rewarding.”

Through ThriveWell’s free community wellness programs, patients and survivors gain access to exercise classes, nutrition education, and supportive community programs that empower them during and
after treatment.
The stories of patient assistance often impact Lynn the most.
“When someone can continue treatment because we helped with transportation, copays, or even an electric bill, it reminds me why ThriveWell exists,” she says.
Many patients facing cancer experience enormous financial strain due to treatment costs, career interruptions, transportation challenges, and rising living expenses. ThriveWell helps relieve those burdens so patients can focus on healing rather than overwhelming financial pressures.
“The stories we hear are heartbreaking,”
Lynn explains. “People who cannot afford transportation to treatment, patients working full time but still unable to pay copays, or families struggling to keep the lights on while fighting cancer.”
For Lynn, this work is also deeply personal. Her own husband, sister and two daughters have each faced cancer diagnoses.
“We were fortunate never to have to make those impossible choices,” she says. “That is why helping others through those moments means so much to me.”
Looking Toward the Future
Even after nearly two decades of service, Lynn remains inspired by what lies ahead for ThriveWell.
“What excites me most is the possibility that one day we will never have to turn away a patient in need,” she says. “Every extra dollar raised represents another life we can impact.”
She envisions a future where every patient who reaches out to ThriveWell receives the support they need, because ThriveWell was able to raise critical needed funds.
Lynn is equally hopeful about the future of cancer research in San Antonio. “The idea that the seed grant funding ThriveWell has provided could one day contribute to a breakthrough treatment or even the cure for this terrible disease is extraordinary,” she shares. “Knowing that a life changing discovery could come from research supported in our own community gives me tremendous hope.”
The Heart of ThriveWell
When asked to describe the heart of ThriveWell, Lynn’s answer comes without hesitation:
“Compassion and empathy.”
“That culture resonates deeply with me,” she says. “So much of what is missing in our world today is compassion for one another, yet I continue to be amazed by the people who serve this organization.”
Lynn credits ThriveWell’s board, staff and supporters for creating a culture centered on kindness, stewardship, and genuine care for others.
“Every member of our board genuinely cares about the mission and serves as a responsible steward of the cause,” Lynn says. “There is a shared commitment to helping others with dignity, kindness, and heart. I believe that is what makes ThriveWell so special.”
