Facing a rare cancer diagnosis at 50 was the hardest challenge of my life, but I discovered that I did not have to face it alone.

My name is Tara. I am 52 years old, a mother to three beautiful daughters, and a grandmother to seven amazing grandchildren. My family is my pride and joy, and I also love collecting pens and keychains for fun!

In December 2024, I was diagnosed with myxoid liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that originates in the body’s fat cells. My cancer journey has touched my life tremendously. It has not always been an easy journey. There were so many ups and downs. My family stuck by my side the whole way through, even on days when I felt that I couldn’t. Here I am, still pushing.

This month is Sarcoma Awareness Month, and it’s important to me because it reminds me of what I endured during my journey and the strength I found. It is also vital to raise awareness because the sarcoma I had is a rare one, so I feel like it does not get as much attention or understanding.

The biggest challenge I faced after my diagnosis was simply accepting it.

Finding the Diva Community

When I was nearing the end of my treatment, I discovered ThriveWell Cancer Foundation’s free Diva&Dude program. As a ThriveWell Diva the program and all it has to offer has become a big part of my daily life. I attend as many classes as I can, where I get to interact with other cancer patients and survivors. These people are some of the strongest men and women I have ever met, and they have helped me THRIVE and open up.

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month
