History of Healing Hearts Gala
While working as the main anchor at KABB FOX 29 News and juggling family life Karen Martinez was diagnosed with stage 3-breast cancer. Throughout this her vision was to establish the Healing Hearts Gala benefitting the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
While undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, Karen managed to raise more than $130,000, which went to help cancer patients with financial support for medical expenses, transportation to treatment, doctor’s appointments and more.
A Legacy
Sadly, Karen is no longer with us (having passed away in 2013), but her spirit lives on through her incredible legacy. As a respected TV reporter, wife, mother and friend she continues to inspire us all.
Where Does the Money Go?
100% of the donations from the Healing Hearts Gala go to the Karen Martinez Patient Assistance Fund at ThriveWell Cancer Foundation that provides assistance to those who are battling cancer in South Texas. This can be in the form of co-payments, transportation, or even gas to get to and from appointments.
The Future
Karen’s vision for the Gala is still very much alive and she continues to help other cancer patients through the money raised. We look forward to seeing you for a beautiful night of dancing, wonderful food, Live and Silent auction, music by Son Latino Show Band and much more.
