Breast Cancer Diagnosis Leads Brontë to ThriveWell’s Supportive Diva Community
Brontë Price’s journey with breast cancer began in November 2019 when she was diagnosed with stage II. She underwent chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy. Determined to minimize the chances of recurrence, she participated in a clinical trial at MD Anderson. She continued with a less invasive form of chemotherapy until February 2021, but unfortunately, liver damage forced her to discontinue treatment prematurely. Thankfully, her doctors were confident the treatment had been successful due to the number of doses she had already received.
While the physical effects of chemotherapy were draining, the emotional toll was even harder for Brontë. She felt like a burden on her husband, who accompanied her to every appointment, and struggled with feelings of helplessness.
However, a spark of hope emerged when she discovered ThriveWell Cancer Foundation’s Diva&Dude program.
ThriveWell’s Diva&Dude Program: Support and Empowerment
ThriveWell’s Diva&Dude program offers free exercise, nutrition, and wellness classes specifically designed for cancer patients and survivors. The program is based on research showing that following healthy habits can significantly reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Across San Antonio, Diva&Dude offers a variety of exercise classes, weekly nutrition education, and wellness programs.
Brontë became a regular participant in the program, enjoying activities like yoga, aqua fit, group therapy, and art therapy. Through these activities, she formed strong friendships with other survivors and found a supportive community. “We’ve all walked in each other’s shoes,” Brontë says. “It’s a brotherhood and a sisterhood, an opportunity to come together and be there for each other. ThriveWell provided the support system I craved. Before I found them, I was stuck in the house.
But the classes and the support group leader, who was also battling breast cancer, helped me confront my anxieties and depression related to doctor’s appointments and scans. Talking to others who understood was crucial.”
Finding the Positive and Moving Forward
Despite the challenges, Brontë maintains a positive outlook. “Going through treatment was horrific,” she acknowledges, “but my motto is to find the positive in every situation. For example, I reconnected with my father, someone I hadn’t spoken to in years. The outpouring of love and support from others has been overwhelming. I’m incredibly grateful for everything. Waking up every day is a blessing. I don’t take anything for granted. You have to have hope, put yourself first, and remember that this is your life. If you have to be part of a club because of your cancer diagnosis, consider yourself in one of the best ones.”
