Diva Betsy: My Skin Cancer Diagnosis

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and I wanted to share a personal experience. Recently, a tiny bump appeared on the outside edge of my lower left lip, looking much like a small pimple. Given my history with breast cancer, I promptly saw my Dermatologist, who performed a biopsy. The pathology report revealed a small, early developing Squamous Cell Carcinoma, In Situ, meaning it was contained and had not spread. The great news is that early diagnosis makes treatment successful and relatively straightforward!

Understanding My Risk Factors

You might be surprised to learn about my diagnosis, especially since I have light eyes, a fair complexion with freckles, and have always been prone to sunburn. Consequently, I’ve never been a sun worshipper and have consciously avoided intense sun exposure. However, I also recognize the importance of outdoor activity, Vitamin D, and fresh air for my overall health and quality of life. Because of this, I have always been diligent about using high-quality, high-percentage sunblock daily, following the instructions carefully.

In addition to my skin type and sun sensitivity, there are other factors that increased my risk. As a senior who has been successfully undergoing treatment for Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer (MBC) since 2013, I’ve experienced firsthand how side effects from breast cancer treatments can often affect the skin. This, combined with the natural aging process and the cumulative effect of sun exposure over the years, significantly elevated my chances of developing skin cancer. This experience underscores the critical importance of early detection and treatment, which in my case, made the skin cancer easily treatable and curable.

Treatment Options and My Choice

My dermatologist outlined several treatment options for Squamous Cell Carcinoma In Situ, including:

Betsy, undergoing radiation therapy, a treatment that uses high-energy rays (such as X-rays) or particles (such as electrons) to kill cancer cells.

Topical Chemotherapy
Radiation
Mohs Surgery

After careful consideration and discussion with my Skin Cancer Specialist, I chose Radiation Therapy. My treatment plan involved 20 radiation sessions.

Important Steps for Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

My experience highlights the importance of proactive skin care and regular check-ups. I urge everyone to:

  • Regularly examine your skin for any new or changing spots, bumps, or moles.
  • See your Dermatologist regularly for professional skin exams.
  • Wear high-quality sunscreen, hats and other head protection, and protective clothing whenever you are outdoors.
  • LIMIT YOUR SUN EXPOSURE, especially during peak hours.
  • Be aware of any medications that can increase photosensitivity or skin reactions.

Let’s all make a conscious effort to protect the skin you’re in!!!
